What is my watch worth?

Four things determine the value of a watch: the exact reference including material and dial variant, the condition of case, dial and movement, completeness with box, papers and receipts, and the current market value of that reference. A service invoice or the original purchase receipt also counts. The prices you see on sales platforms are usually asking prices – what a seller wants, not what a watch has actually fetched. If you would like to have your watch valued, good photos via WhatsApp are usually enough for a first appraisal. Our offer becomes binding once we have examined the watch itself.

Selling an old watch or an heirloom

A watch put up for sale often comes from an estate or has spent years in a drawer, and it is frequently unclear who made it and what it might be worth. The first clues are the name on the dial, hallmarks such as 585 or 750 inside the case back and the signature on the movement – we look at all of this closely when we assess the watch. If you want to sell a gold watch, it helps to know: with less familiar makers, the gold of the case and bracelet often accounts for a large part of the value, while with sought-after brands the collector value matters most. Keep old invoices, service receipts and the original box, even if it is worn.

Selling directly to a dealer rather than online or at auction

Selling a watch privately on a platform means writing a listing, answering questions, negotiating with strangers and, depending on the platform, arranging a secure payment yourself. An auction is tied to fixed sale dates, and the seller’s commission and fees are usually deducted from the hammer price. When you sell directly to a dealer, there is no commission and no auction fee, and you do not have to wait for a buyer. At Bonn Luxury, you receive a firm offer once we have examined your watch, and you can compare it with the other options. Whether you accept it is entirely up to you – there is no obligation.

Selling your watch in Bonn and the surrounding area

Our shop is in Bonn city centre, at Brüdergasse 24; we have been buying and selling watches here since 2016. If you want to sell, please arrange an appointment beforehand – that way there is time for your watch, and the examination need not be rushed. If you would like to sell a collection or an estate with several watches, you do not need to bring everything to the shop: on request we will visit you at home in Bonn and the surrounding area, whether in Bad Godesberg, the Rhein-Sieg district or the Ahr valley. A home visit is also without obligation, and you decide afterwards which pieces you want to sell.

Frequently asked questions about selling

What does it cost to have my watch valued?
Nothing. Whether you send photos via WhatsApp or bring the watch to an appointment in our shop, the appraisal is free and without obligation. You can also ask for one if you have not yet decided whether to sell; you make that decision afterwards, without any commitment. The appraisal states the amount at which we would buy your watch – it is not a formal valuation report.
Which photos do you need for a first appraisal?
Photos of the dial, case back, crown and clasp help, plus box and papers if available; send them via WhatsApp or email. Tell us the reference if you know it; depending on the brand, it is in the papers or on the case back. If it is engraved between the lugs, please do not remove the bracelet yourself. Mention whether the watch runs and when it was last serviced.
Do you also buy watches without box and papers?
As a rule, yes. Box, papers and receipts are reflected in the offer, and complete sets generally fetch more. We examine a watch without documents just as carefully; our offer then relates to the watch itself. If you still have spare links, an old strap or a service invoice, bring them along.
Do you also buy watches that no longer run?
In many cases, yes. A watch that has stopped or needs a service can still be well worth having assessed – what matters is the maker, the model and the condition. We take the cost of the service into account in our offer. Please do not attempt a repair and do not open the case yourself.
Should I have my watch polished or serviced before selling it?
No. Polishing removes material from case and bracelet and rounds off edges that collectors value precisely when they are untouched. A new dial or replaced hands also often reduce the value of a vintage watch. There is no need to have the watch serviced before selling – we assess the condition of the movement anyway when we examine the watch. Bring the watch as it is.
How does a sale in the shop work?
You arrange an appointment and bring the watch with its box, papers and receipts, together with your ID card or passport. We examine the watch in front of you and tell you our offer. If we agree on a price, we pay you immediately and discreetly; if not, you take your watch home again without any obligation.
